Care Label Wash Testing: What Evidence to Request Before Bulk Approval

What evidence supports a care-label wash-durability claim? The evidence needs to identify the actual sample and construction, test conditions or method, acceptance criteria and results for the required scope. Review print readability, the label itself and any sewn assembly as separate outcomes. A sample photograph or a report for a different construction does not establish performance for your order.

This is a procurement evidence checklist. It does not prescribe washing instructions for a garment or certify a label’s performance. Your brand’s responsible technical team should establish the garment care content and the required test scope. For wording, materials and version release, use the care label production guide.

Next steps: review wording and production approval, compare care-label layout references, or describe your required evaluation scope. This checklist does not publish or establish a project-specific test result.

Identify the exact sample the evidence should cover

Give the physical label a sample ID and record its proposed substrate, print construction, dimensions, artwork revision and supply format. If testing includes a garment, record the garment or fabric reference and how the label is attached. A report for a different material or print route may not answer the question for the sample you intend to buy.

Retain an untested reference so before-and-after comparisons can be traced. Ask who will perform the evaluation, which specimen they will receive and who will decide whether the result is acceptable. Testing availability, outside laboratory work and any associated charges need confirmation separately from the ordinary sample offer.

Agree conditions before comparing results

Write down the relevant washing and drying conditions, number of cycles or test sequence, detergent and any special treatment required by the buyer’s technical specification. If a formal test method is needed, identify its method and version with the responsible laboratory. Have the buyer define the acceptance criterion before the result is produced.

AATCC’s public description of its accelerated laundering colourfastness method illustrates that textile testing has a defined purpose and specified conditions. It is not a universal care-label durability certificate. The appropriate method and its scope must match the question being tested; a colourfastness result alone does not establish every aspect of print readability or assembly performance.

Evidence question What to identify What to retain
Printed information Actual artwork and printed sample Before/after readability observations and images
Label itself Actual substrate, cut and finish Changes in appearance or dimensions against agreed criteria
Sewn assembly Garment reference and attachment method Position, seam and attachment observations after the agreed sequence

Check print, label and attachment as separate outcomes

For printed information, inspect the smallest wording and symbols in the actual layout. Record whether required content can still be read using the agreed review method, and identify any fading, smearing or lost detail. Photos support a record, but they should name the sample and conditions rather than stand alone as proof.

For the label, record relevant changes such as curling, fraying or dimensional change when those are within the agreed scope. For the assembly, inspect the label in the intended sewing position after the specified treatment. An unattached label check cannot by itself establish how the completed garment seam will perform.

Reconcile the report before releasing production

Match the result to the sample ID, material/print description, artwork revision, test conditions and acceptance criteria. Record pass, revise or unresolved for each required outcome. If a report excludes a question you need answered, keep that question pending rather than reading a broad approval into the document.

If the material, printing, attachment or required conditions change, ask the responsible party whether a fresh evaluation is needed. Keep the approved reference and report with the production record. Our rolls-versus-cut-pieces guide covers delivery and receiving units; it does not replace performance evidence.

CanKun offers custom orders with MOQ starting at 100, subject to the specification and versions. Samples are free; shipping and special requirements are confirmed separately. Sampling is usually 3 days after artwork and specification review, with bulk production usually 7–15 days after physical sample and specification approval. Shipping time is separate. Wu Jess responds within 24 hours.
