Woven Label Color Matching: Physical Reference and Sample Approval

How should woven label colours be approved? Identify the controlling physical reference, artwork revision, ground and logo colours, garment colourways and viewing conditions. Review the proposed woven sample alongside that reference, then record approval for each version. A screen image alone is not a colour-match guarantee; any numerical tolerance needs an agreed method and criterion.

This guide is for the colour decision within a custom woven label project. The woven label size and fold guide covers dimensions and placement; keep those fixed while comparing colour options so the review has a clear purpose.

Next steps: compare custom woven labels for clothing, review cut edges and attachment, or send a woven-label colour brief.

Name the reference that controls the colour decision

State whether the target is an existing approved woven label, a physical garment swatch or a named colour reference. When using a reference system, specify the system and edition or reference identifier rather than supplying only an isolated code. If the garment has several colourways, identify which label version belongs to each one.

Send the logo file for layout, but say whether its screen colours are only a direction or an approval target. If several references disagree, write their order of priority. For example, you may ask to match an approved label while checking its appearance beside a new garment fabric. That is a different task from matching the fabric itself.

Reference Useful for Decision to record
Approved physical label Continuity with an existing brand item Reference ID and condition of retained sample
Garment swatch Review beside the actual product fabric Whether the label should match or contrast
Named colour reference Communicating a specified target Full system/reference and sample acceptance route
Digital artwork or photo Initial layout and visual direction Whether it is illustrative or an approval reference

Agree where and how the sample will be viewed

Record the viewing light and background used for approval. Compare the sample and controlling reference together, with consistent orientation, and include the relevant garment swatch. If the brand needs the appearance to work in more than one lighting environment, identify those environments in the brief and review each one.

Datacolor’s textile colour guidance explains that lighting, texture, weave and other material characteristics affect visual colour assessment. A photograph or screen view alone therefore leaves important context unspecified. The supplier’s available viewing or measurement equipment must be confirmed for the project; this guide does not imply that CanKun owns a particular instrument.

Review ground, logo and small details separately

Give each colour role a name: ground, main logo, small lettering or decorative area. Review the ground against the controlling reference, then check the contrast and readability of the logo and smallest detail at the finished label size. A satisfactory overall colour impression does not automatically approve every element.

Ask the supplier to identify the proposed colour selection on the sample record. If a requested match cannot be achieved in the proposed construction, request a documented alternative for review. Avoid approving an unspecified “closest colour” when the difference matters to the brand. Keep available options and any cost or timing effect in the quotation rather than assuming unlimited choices.

Write an approval that another person can repeat

Use “approved”, “revise” or “pending” for each colour role and viewing context. Identify the retained physical sample, artwork revision and approver. If the project requires numerical colour tolerances, have the buyer and responsible technical party agree the measurement method and criterion; do not treat an arbitrary number as a universal woven label limit.

Mark substitutions that require renewed approval. A changed garment colourway, label ground or construction may change the comparison context. Use our repeat-order change register to carry the retained reference forward without silently overwriting it.
