Custom Die Cut Hang Tags: Shape and Cutting Reference Approval

What is needed to quote custom die cut hang tags? Provide the dimensioned outline, hole position, units, artwork, proposed stock and quantity for each version. Confirm feasibility and approve the shape revision with the physical sample before bulk production. A photograph or public planning template is a discussion reference, not a production-approved cutting file.

This guide covers shape and cutting-reference control. Keep paper, print colours and finishing areas in the hang tag printing approval guide. Confirm the feasibility of the requested outline and the supplier’s proposed cutting method before ordering a custom construction.

Next steps: compare custom printed hang tags, review stock comparisons and a real layer-and-string assembly reference, or request a custom-shape review.

Separate the cutting outline from printed artwork

Give the cutting drawing an ID and revision independent of the logo file. Mark its units, intended finished dimensions and orientation. Show the outside contour, any internal opening and the attachment hole with clear labels. Ask the supplier to confirm its required file format and how these instructions should be separated from printable content.

If the supplier adjusts a narrow feature, corner or opening to make the shape practical, request a revised drawing for approval. Do not let an informal production adjustment become an undocumented replacement for the buyer’s intended shape.

Reference Record before quotation Confirm before release
Shape drawing Contour ID, revision, units and finished dimensions Supplier-reviewed cutting reference
Attachment Hole position and requested string or assembly Actual tag can be attached as intended
Critical features Named corners, openings or narrow sections Agreed dimensions and acceptance checks
Printing Artwork revision linked to the shape revision Print and finish remain correctly positioned

Agree the dimensions that matter to the buyer

For an irregular outline, overall width and height may not describe the feature that matters most. Mark critical dimensions on the drawing, such as the position of a notch relative to the attachment hole or the usable area for an information panel. Agree any tolerances and the checking method with the supplier instead of borrowing a universal tolerance from a different tag.

Check the intended attachment on a physical sample. Review whether the shape turns or overlaps another card in the assembled set and whether the hole or string covers important content. Use the real card-layer and string sample case as an explanation of assembly review, not as a dimensional template for the new outline.

Link the first sample to the cutting reference

Record the shape drawing revision, artwork revision, proposed stock and sample ID together. Compare the sample’s outline and named critical features with that reference. Separately inspect print position and any finishing area near an edge or opening. A satisfactory paper mockup does not establish the result of the final stock and production method.

Ask the supplier what checks are needed after a change to stock, outline, hole or finishing process. Keep unresolved observations open until the designated buyer approves the revised drawing or sample. This worksheet does not set a durability rating for a narrow feature or guarantee any particular cutting accuracy.

Clarify cutting-tool charges and repeat-order use

Ask whether the proposed production route requires a dedicated tool, setup file or another shape reference. If there is a separate charge, identify what it covers. Confirm who retains the reference, how it is identified for repeat orders and any applicable storage or reuse arrangements. These commercial terms need written agreement; they do not follow automatically from the phrase “custom die cut”.

For a repeat order, name the approved shape revision even when the artwork is unchanged. A new logo colour does not necessarily require a new shape, while a changed hole or contour requires a shape review. Have the supplier confirm the actual production consequences before relying on an old quotation.
